Taiwanese indigenous people reaching out to the world
It has always been a mission for the Taiwan Indigenous Television (TITV) to focus on indigenous affairs and promote indigenous cultures. In 2008, to better serve the tribal peoples, TITV inaugurated its east coast news center to provide reports chiefly related to Hualien, Taitung and Pingtung.
This is a way to keep a balance in news coverage in the west and east parts of Taiwan and allow indigenous peoples to speak out for themselves.
New Zealand’s Maori Television hosted the first World Indigenous Television Broadcasting Conference (WITBC) in 2008. The theme of the year was “Reclaiming the Future”. Conference participants discussed approaches to preserve and promote indigenous cultures and languages, attract more viewers, spread aboriginal knowledge and enhance public understanding of the indigenous world.
TITV and Public Television Service together won the opportunity to host WITBC 2010. Taiwan’s indigenous media can now stand on the world stage.
With a mindset of “sharing the indigenous world,” TITV not only provides an international indigenous-oriented platform for Taiwanese media, but also promotes collaborations and the exchange of news and other programs among WITBN members in order to upgrade production quality. TITV aims to demonstrate to the world the rich and colorful cultures of the indigenous peoples and the beauty of Taiwan.
We set off from the tribes and march through the mountains to pass on the teachings and words of wisdom of our ancestors. With our heads up high and broad smiles on our faces, let’s join hands to be the masters of our own world.
